What are mystery gifts or nintendo events in pokmon games?

So, I recently purchased the new pokemon game. I read online about these events and mystery gifts and i'm honestly not sure what they are, how their obtainable, or what they do for that matter. I have 3 legendaries so far...Raikou, Entei, and Lugia. Are these the only ones i get in my game (soulsilver) or can I get more, and are the rest only obtainable through events or mystery gifts?

well different things can be got from mystery gifts.
one of the things for soulsilver and heartgold is that you can download a yellow path route onto your ds for putting onto your pokewalker.this has loads of pikachu on it.
there is also pokemon such as jirachi, a very very rare pokemon.
