Question by Wired up: How much on average do police detectives make per month in the USA?
In American cop shows the detectives always complain about their wages "what! buy a house on my wages?" Cagney and Lacey was a prime example and Hill street blues as well. Lacey always complaining about "hoivey juneya" and complaining to big hoivey about the small apartment they rent. Surely a dectective would be on good wages even back then?
Don't get me wrong, i respect and uphold the law ,im no cop hater. I didn't know the cops in the States were thought of as civil servants. Where i'm from starting salary is 37,000 per year plus time off for further education paid and a personal side arm for your own off duty protection. Thats 55,000 dollars for being a newly graduated police officer.

Don't believe a thing that you see on television. It is not realistic.
There is no way to answer your question because it depends on where the officer works, what is rank is, how long he has been on the department, and a variety of other factors. There is NO way to accurately answer your question. Obviously a detective in New York City would make more than a detective in Podunk, Iowa. Obviously a detective Sgt. would make more than a brand new detective.
