Question by Chris: UK Secondary School Teachers and Educators: Do you still teach grammar and punctuation?

My wife told me today that grammar and punctuation is not taught at secondary level in the UK. Is that true? I can't believe it is.

I am a secondary school English teacher in the UK. Yes, we still teach grammar and punctuation, although sadly, many students seem to forever plateau at the full-stop stage. I teach in fairly deprived area and it's really hard to get across the finer points of semi-colons and subordinate clauses when lots of the kids never read for pleasure. I honestly believe that the best, if not the only, way to learn punctuation is by reading a range of fiction.
